Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with Colorflock
The crested caracara: a mexican icon
The Crested Caracara has long been a symbol of national importance in Mexico. Ornithological historians believe that the “Mexican eagle” held a sacred position within pre-Colombian Aztec culture, and it continues to be a common subject of folklore and legends throughout Central and South America.
This member of the Falconidae family can be found soaring above open country from the deserts of the Southwestern US to the pampas of South America.
The artwork featured in this series is based on the photography of Mike Henry, a renowned bird and wildlife photographer in Tucson, Arizona.

What is papel picado?
Papel picado (in English: “cut paper”), is a traditional Mexican folk art medium made by cutting beautiful and often elaborate designs into brightly colored paper. It evolved from early Aztec art that including carving spirit figures from paper derived from mulberry and fig bark.
